The site was previously part of the St. Louis VA Medical Center. Design and construction services were divided into three phases to better align with the hospital’s demolition and construction schedule. An early turnover burial section 5a was designed to provide additional space for burials during the course of construction. Phases 5a and 5b consisted of an 8.45-acre expansion with 6,248 pre-placed crypts and in-ground cremains divided among 6 new sections. Phase 5c consisted of the remaining 9.78 acres of the expansion, with five new burial sections totaling 9,485 pre-placed crypts and in-ground cremains. Phases included a new restroom building, new asphalt roads, retaining walls, new stormwater pipe and bio-retention ponds.
