The VA’s Electronic Health Records Modernization (EHRM) Program is a national initiative to upgrade all VA campus internal communications and data systems to support fiber networks, increase data security and increase the speed of patient record access and retrieval. All VA buildings on the campus where patients or VA staff require electronic access to records need to be connected with a series of concrete-encased fiber duct banks. The duct banks are constructed using multiple four-inch PVC pipes as conduit. They are subdivided as needed to accommodate dedicated fiber optic or low voltage electrical wires to connect the network and operate equipment.

Construction plans for 11,444 LF of new fiber duct banks and 9.2 miles of internal fiber networks were developed. Given the linear nature of the project, erosion control measures were also provided.
