Rehabilitate Building 9 for Mental Health Center

Rehabilitate Building 9 for Mental Health Center

Department of Veterans Affairs – Charles George VA Medical Center, Asheville, NC

What We Did

From ugly duckling to beautiful swan; this 42,619 sf, multi-story, historic facility was constructed in the early 1930’s as a nurse’s dormitory. Abandoned for 40+ years, it sustained extensive interior and exterior damage. The rehabilitated building will house the VA’s mental health treatment program plus staff and support spaces. While maintaining the historical integrity, the design provides modernizations such as a new elevator; high efficiency lighting and mechanical systems; and current data/voice capability all within the context of leading edge behavioral health care.
